Tekno Challenges Fela's Status as Afrobeats Originator

Nigerian singer Augustine Miles Kelechi, known as Tekno, has challenged the notion that the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is the originator of Afrobeats. In an interview with Hot 97 FM in New York, Tekno argued that various Nigerian music legends, including the late highlife musician Oliver De Coque, played significant roles in developing the sound associated with Afrobeats.

He acknowledged Fela's global exposure and his contributions to taking Afrobeat to international audiences but insisted that other artists also deserve recognition. Tekno stated, “Fela is not the originator of Afrobeats...

I feel like these legends deserved more recognition.” He expressed that his music, particularly his song "Rara," was inspired by Fela, but he was more influenced by Oliver De Coque and other Eastern Nigerian legends. Tekno's comments have reignited discussions about the origins and evolution of Afrobeats and the contributions of musicians from various regions of Nigeria.
