Fernandes, Carrick at odds over tactics after Manchester United's 4-1 Como loss

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has openly disagreed with head coach Michael Carrick over the team's tactical decisions following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como in Italy. The defeat extended United's winless streak to seven matches across all competitions and marked their fifth loss in 11 games this season.

Early defensive lapses defined the performance, with Como scoring after just 118 seconds, continuing a troubling pattern of conceding within the opening minutes in recent European matches. Fernandes, who was substituted out in the 67th minute, criticized the team's approach to pressing and defensive positioning after the final whistle.

The captain specifically questioned the coaching staff's decision to avoid man-to-man marking, arguing that this tactical choice left gaps that Como exploited during the match. Carrick, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of player effort and commitment rather than solely focusing on tactical execution, presenting a different analysis of the team's shortcomings.

The contrasting viewpoints between manager and captain underline growing tensions at the club. Carrick apologized to approximately 700 traveling supporters at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium, making a visible gesture toward the away section after the final whistle.

His post-match remarks drew attention as he repeatedly raised his hands toward the fans, signaling acknowledgment of their disappointment. United's inconsistent form has intensified scrutiny of Carrick's leadership and the team's overall direction.

The tactical disagreement between the club's on-field leader and its manager reflects deeper concerns about performance standards and decision-making at Old Trafford. The sources consulted report the clash occurred on either October 21 or 22, depending on the outlet's publication timing.
