FG Approves Electric Buses to Boost Local Auto Industry

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the acquisition of electric buses for civil servants as part of efforts to promote local vehicle assembly and accelerate the country's transition to cleaner transportation. Joseph Osanipin, the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), disclosed this during a briefing with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

The initiative aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing and stimulate growth in Nigeria's automotive sector. The government plans to procure charging infrastructure across various parts of the country to support the deployment and adoption of electric vehicles.

Osanipin highlighted the establishment of the Automotive Development Park in Nnewi, Anambra State, which will provide shared infrastructure for automotive manufacturing components. This park is designed to facilitate operations for investors without requiring individual infrastructure investments.

The NADDC is also seeking additional investments to accelerate the development of the park and attract key players in the sector, urging Nigerians to patronize local vehicle assemblers to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
