Nigeria Expands CNG Initiative to Include Electric Vehicles

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expanded the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to include electric vehicles (EVs), as announced by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Thursday. President Bola Tinubu approved this expansion, directing the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Ismael Ahm, to establish a coordination process for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits across the country.

The initiative aims to ensure that these kits are accessible to Nigerians without being burdensome in cost. The initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria and relevant financial institutions to design cost-effective financing structures for vehicle conversions, ensuring wide public access.

Additionally, the initiative will accelerate the deployment of mobile refuel units (MRUs) to expand access to CNG infrastructure. This comprehensive strategy will cover both gas-driven and electric vehicles, contributing to Nigeria's clean mobility strategy and leveraging the country's abundant resources to strengthen energy security and conserve foreign exchange.
