FG Launches Framework for Health Facility Electrification

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an institutional reform and financing framework aimed at accelerating the electrification of health facilities nationwide. This decision was made during the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee (IMSC) of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI), which is a presidential program coordinated by the Federal Ministries of Power and Health and Social Welfare.

The initiative aims to provide reliable electricity to at least 30% of Nigeria’s health facilities by the end of 2027. The meeting was chaired by Dr Isiaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, and co-chaired by Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Power.

Tegbe emphasized the need for project delivery rather than mere announcements, while Salako announced the approval of a financing framework to mobilize investments for healthcare electrification. The committee also cleared eight private sector proposals for further engagement and established Energy Management Teams at federal tertiary hospitals.

The initiative will be institutionalized through dedicated budgetary provisions and a full-time Project Coordination Unit.
