Nigeria Approves Framework for Health Facility Electrification

The federal government of Nigeria has approved an institutional reform and financing framework aimed at accelerating the electrification of health facilities across the nation. This decision was made during the third meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee (IMSC) of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI), a presidential program coordinated by the Federal Ministries of Power and Health and Social Welfare.

The initiative targets reliable electricity for at least 30% of Nigeria’s health facilities by the end of 2027. Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, emphasized the need to transition from announcements to actual project delivery, highlighting the importance of energizing teaching hospitals, state hospitals, and primary healthcare centers.

The Rural Electrification Agency has already energized five Federal Teaching Hospitals and several other health facilities. Tegbe linked the initiative to improved patient outcomes, stating that dependable power would reduce reliance on emergency generators.

Permanent Secretary Mahmud Mamman noted the critical need for uninterrupted electricity to support essential medical operations.
