Nigeria Power for Health Initiative Gains Financing Framework

Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced key resolutions from the Third Meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee on the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative (NPHI).

This initiative, established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the National Dialogue on Power for Health in December 2025, aims to enhance access to reliable electricity in health facilities across Nigeria. The Steering Committee approved a comprehensive financing framework and an energy management framework to ensure sustainability of energy infrastructure.

Energy management committees have been set up in federal tertiary health institutions, with state governments encouraged to adopt similar models. The Committee also endorsed the institutionalization of NPHI through dedicated budgetary provisions and a permanent office for coordination.

Dr. Salako noted ongoing efforts to eliminate power outages in health facilities, highlighting the Rural Electrification Agency's provision of reliable power to about 100 hospitals and the support from development partners.
