FG Approves N32.88bn for Basic Healthcare Fund

The Federal Government of Nigeria approved the disbursement of N32.88 billion for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) during the second quarter of 2026. This funding is intended to sustain primary healthcare services and accelerate ongoing health sector reforms.

The approval was made during the 15th meeting of the Ministerial Oversight Committee (MOC) on BHCPF, chaired by Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. The government aims to strengthen the health sector by ensuring that all 36 states provide counterpart funding.

The BHCPF has disbursed N339 billion over the past 12 years, with N235 billion released in the last three years alone under the Tinubu administration. The fund supports 8,000 primary healthcare centers and addresses emergency medical services, with 35 states establishing emergency medical treatment structures.

The government plans to expand healthcare facilities and improve disease surveillance in response to recent health challenges, including outbreaks of cholera and Lassa fever.
