Abuja Doctor Charged with IVF Fraud and Conspiracy

John Abeb, a 54-year-old chief consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at Joje Abeb Fertility Centre in Abuja, was arraigned on three counts of fraud and conspiracy at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on September 17, 2025. The charges stem from allegations that he unlawfully disclosed confidential medical records of a patient, Mari Manga, and sold the couple's fully developed embryo without consent, violating the National Health Act of 2014.

The prosecution claims that Abeb deceived the couple into paying N19 million for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, which he allegedly did not have the skill to perform. The case highlights serious breaches of medical ethics and patient confidentiality, with the alleged offenses occurring between January and May 2025.

The court proceedings are ongoing, with Abeb facing significant legal repercussions if found guilty.
