FG and ASUU Sign Pact to Enhance University Education

The Federal Government (FG) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a new agreement intended to enhance public university education in Nigeria. This agreement, described as a significant step forward by the Education Rights Campaign, includes a 40% salary increase for lecturers, which is part of the consolidated academic staff salary structure.

Ogunjimi Isaac, the Deputy National Coordinator of the Education Rights Campaign, and Adaramoy Michael Lenin, representing the FG, emphasized that while this agreement is a positive development, there remain significant inadequacies in the public university education system that need to be addressed. The agreement aims to support the teaching and research capabilities of university staff, although concerns persist regarding the overall resilience and determination of ASUU members and leadership in the face of ongoing challenges in the education sector.
