ASUU Warns FG Over Incomplete Salary Payments

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Christoph Piwuna, has sent a fresh warning to the Federal Government concerning the incomplete payment of salaries to university lecturers. Piwuna clarified that contrary to reports suggesting a four-day ultimatum, ASUU is maintaining its stance for compliance with the December 2025 agreement, which includes a 40% salary increase and improved welfare provisions for academic staff.

He noted that while salary records have changed since January, the implementation remains incomplete, particularly affecting categories such as sabbatical appointments. Piwuna emphasized that the delay in the passage of the national budget is a major factor affecting the funding challenges for universities.

He criticized the government for focusing on political activities ahead of the 2027 elections instead of addressing these issues. ASUU insists that if the government fails to ensure full salary payments by the end of March, the union will respond according to established procedures.
