Nigeria Evacuates Citizens from Iran Amid Tensions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the evacuation of Nigerians residing in Iran due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), disclosed this development in a post on Tuesday.

The evacuation is being coordinated by the Nigerian embassy in Tehran, which will assist Nigerians wishing to leave the country by providing escorts across the Armenian border to ensure safe passage. This decision follows a crisis that began on February 28, triggered by military strikes from the United States and Israel, which reportedly led to retaliatory missile and drone strikes across parts of the region, raising fears of a wider conflict.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that no Nigerians in Iran have been affected by the ongoing war, and the embassy remains open to assist those who wish to leave amid the growing concerns for the safety of foreign nationals in the area.
