FG Launches Mass Trial of Terrorism Suspects in Abuja

On Tuesday, the Federal Government commenced a mass trial of suspected terrorists at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which represents a departure from the traditional trial venue in Kainji, Niger State. This trial involves multiple defendants who are facing various terror-related charges.

The relocation to Abuja is necessitated by the ongoing Easter vacation, which runs from April 7 to April 13, with regular court sessions scheduled to resume across divisions on April 14. The prosecuting team is led by Aliyu Abubakar, the Director General of the Legal Aid Council, and the proceedings are overseen by Justice Binta Nyako.

Among the 20 suspects listed for trial are Hamat Modu, Isah Ali, Awal Bello, Shehu Bukar, Alhaji Kull, Moham Abacha, Hassan Aminami, Mallum Tasiu, and Yakubu Abdullahi. Security around the court has been visibly heightened, with armed personnel deployed strategically and police helicopters maintaining aerial surveillance over the central business district of Abuja, indicating the government's commitment to addressing terrorism cases efficiently, even during the court vacation period.
