FG Launches Solar Power Initiative for Universities

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister for Power Joseph Tegbe, has initiated a project to power universities with solar panels. Tegbe assured Nigerians that there are no plans to increase electricity tariffs in the near future, emphasizing that the ministry's immediate focus is on improving service delivery.

He stated that the government aims to ensure that universities have sufficient energy and is committed to universal metering, allowing consumers to pay only for the electricity they consume. Tegbe described this initiative as the beginning of a new chapter characterized by openness, accountability, and collaboration, termed “Resetting the Sector.” He noted that this does not imply that previous achievements are disregarded but rather aims to build on the reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The overarching goal is to enhance electricity availability, reliability, and market sustainability, ultimately making electricity a catalyst for national productivity and economic growth.
