FG Introduces Electricity Tariffs for Universities, Hospitals

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to implement electricity tariffs for 25 tertiary institutions and teaching hospitals that have previously enjoyed free electricity from renewable energy projects. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced this change on Wednesday during the unveiling of the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) in Abuja.

Tegbe stated that the decision aims to prevent the neglect of renewable energy facilities, which have suffered from poor maintenance in the past. He noted that while institutions had benefited from free electricity for two years, that arrangement is now over.

Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, supported this initiative, emphasizing that beneficiary institutions must contribute to the maintenance of the facilities. Since 2017, the government has deployed 82 megawatts of solar hybrid power to 22 federal universities and three teaching hospitals under the Energising Education Programme.

RAMCO will oversee the management and maintenance of these renewable energy assets.
