Nigeria's Education Minister Promotes Solar Power in Universities

Dr Tunji Alausa, the Nigerian Minister of Education, stated that the deployment of off-grid solar solutions in educational institutions is significantly reducing energy costs and enhancing learning conditions. This initiative is part of the Energising Education Programme, executed by the Rural Electrification Agency.

In an interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, Alausa explained that the reliance on conventional power sources has historically hindered academic stability and scientific research due to high utility costs and frequent national grid failures. He emphasized the need for universities to transition to dedicated solar mini-grids to ensure reliable power for lecture halls, laboratories, and university hospitals.

Alausa noted that the financial burden of electricity tariffs has strained university finances, diverting funds from essential academic resources. He reaffirmed that providing sustainable power to tertiary institutions is crucial for human capital development and aims to position Nigerian universities as competitive research centers.

The government has also established the Renewable Energy Asset Management Company to maintain the deployed mini-grids for long-term sustainability.
