FG Charges Timipre Sylva and Others with Treason

The Federal Government has filed 13 counts of treason against six individuals, including former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, in the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges, signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, allege a conspiracy to overthrow President Tinubu's administration.

Other defendants include retired Major General Moham Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmu Ochegobia, and police inspector Ibrahim Zekeri. The government claims the defendants had prior knowledge of a coup plot and failed to report it.

Additional charges involve terrorism-related offenses under the Terrorism Prevention Prohibition Act of 2022, with allegations that the defendants conspired to destabilize Nigeria's constitutional structure. Specific financial amounts are cited, including N50 million linked to Goni and N2 million held by Sani, with accusations of receiving funds outside the banking system.

The case is expected to be heard by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, amid calls for due process from local leaders.
