Federal Government Launches 3MW Solar Project at Abuja University

On September 17, the Federal Government commissioned a 3MW solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja. This initiative aims to strengthen electricity supply for teaching, research, laboratories, and other critical operations.

The project was delivered under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme (EEP) in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the World Bank-funded Nigeria Electrification Project. Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Power, described the project as a demonstration of how energy investment can support human capital development.

The facility features a 3.3MW solar array, a 3MW AC output capacity, and 2MWh of battery storage to ensure power availability beyond solar hours. Tegbe mentioned that the project is just the beginning of efforts to provide reliable electricity across the university, with plans to extend power to student hostels within six months.

Additionally, the project includes 388 streetlights to enhance campus security and illumination.
