Minister of Power Launches 3MW Solar Project at University

The Federal Government has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing service delivery and expanding access to reliable electricity. The Minister of Power made this statement after the commissioning of a 3MW captive solar hybrid power project at the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University.

This project aims to provide stable and cleaner electricity to approximately 58,726 students, reducing reliance on diesel generators. Developed by the Rural Electrification Agency under Phase II of the Energising Education Programme, it features a 3.3MWp solar array, 3MW AC output, and a 2MWh battery storage system.

The project also includes 388 solar-powered street lights to improve campus safety. The Minister reiterated that universal metering is a priority for accurate billing and transparency, while the government continues to explore reforms to the electricity subsidy framework, ensuring the needs of vulnerable consumers are considered.
