FG Launches 60.82MW Solar Power Initiative in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria is enhancing its electricity supply by injecting a total of 60.82 megawatts (MW) of solar-generated power into the national grid. This initiative includes the commencement of a 13.92 megawatt-peak (MWp) interconnected hybrid solar mini-grid project in Yobe State.

This project is part of a broader strategy to expand renewable energy infrastructure and improve electricity access amid ongoing power supply challenges. Prior to the Yobe project, the government had developed 46.9MW of solar power infrastructure across five states, including a 20MW mini-grid in Egume, Kogi State, an 11.9MWp mini-grid in Ogu-Bolo, Rivers State, and a 10MW solar installation in Kofare, Adamawa State.

Additionally, projects in Kebbi and Plateau States are underway. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), stated that these mini-grids are designed to integrate with existing electricity networks to foster economic development.

Nigeria currently produces less than 6,000MW for a population exceeding 250 million, and the government aims to improve electricity access through these renewable energy projects.
