Federal Government Launches Solar Mini-Grid at University

The Federal Government commissioned a 3.3MWp solar hybrid mini-grid with 2MWh battery storage at Yakubu Gowon University on Wednesday. This initiative aims to improve reliable electricity supply to federal tertiary institutions and includes 3MW of AC output capacity, a dedicated grid connection, and a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre.

The battery system supports critical loads beyond daylight hours, while the grid connection caters to non-critical demand when solar generation is unavailable. This project is part of Phase 2 of the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), which covers seven universities and two teaching hospitals.

Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, stated that the facility would benefit 58,726 students and improve campus lighting and security with 388 solar-powered streetlights. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), emphasized the project's impact on teaching, research, and campus safety.

The REA also established a Renewable Energy Workshop and Training Centre to develop local technical skills.
