FG Reaffirms Commitment to Combat Drug Trafficking

On Wednesday, George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirmed the Federal Government of Nigeria's commitment to dismantling drug cartels and promoting the well-being of Nigerians. This statement was made during the opening ceremony of the National Drug Use Summit held in Abuja, which focused on preventing illicit drug use and dismantling trafficking networks.

Akume emphasized that no nation can achieve sustainable development when its youth are threatened by substance abuse. He called for collective action and partnerships among various stakeholders, including government institutions, families, and the private sector, to confront the drug problem.

The summit, organized by the NDLEA and the Federal Ministry of Health, provided a platform for dialogue and action against the growing burden of drug use and substance use disorders. Brig Gen Mohammed Marwa, the NDLEA Chairman, highlighted the agency's significant successes in drug seizures and arrests over the past 18 months, including 29,262 arrests and the seizure of illicit drugs valued at N1.5 trillion.
