FG committed to full operation of Baro Port – Oyetola

Minister Oyetola reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to the full operation of the Baro Port during a House of Representatives Committee meeting. The port, commissioned in 2019, has not been able to operate at full capacity due to infrastructure gaps and navigability issues.

The Minister outlined plans to address these challenges, including continuous dredging, developing road and rail connections, and attracting private sector operators through concession partnerships. The Ministry aims to transform the Baro Port into a thriving inland gateway, strategically positioned to link the agricultural value chain and boost Nigeria's trade competitiveness within the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The National Inland Waterways Authority plans to dredge the inland waterway to maintain appropriate depth for operations. The Ministry of Transportation is also developing a rail line to connect the port to the rest of the country.

The stakeholders' engagement seeks to ensure the full operationalization of the port and garner support for the project.
