FG Allocates N32.9bn for Primary Healthcare Expansion

The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated N32.9 billion to support more than 8,300 primary healthcare centres across the nation, with an expansion plan to reach approximately 13,000 facilities. This announcement was made by Dr.

Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, during the HealthCare Summit 2026 held in Lagos. The summit's theme, “Financing Growth, Unlocking Opportunity, Building the Future of Healthcare,” addresses key constraints in Nigeria’s health system.

Dr. Salako emphasized the importance of combining government policy with private capital to enhance healthcare infrastructure.

He referenced the National Health Act 2014, which established the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), noting that it has disbursed N339 billion over 12 years, with N235 billion released in the last three years under the current administration's Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. He also mentioned that out-of-pocket spending constitutes 71% of total health expenditure in Nigeria, significantly higher than the global benchmark of 15 to 20%.
