Nigeria to Launch Two Next-Gen Communication Satellites

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, along with Nigeria Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited, is engaging Israeli and French manufacturers to produce two next-generation communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B. The satellites will be delivered by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales Alenia Space of France.

This project has progressed following the Federal Executive Council's approval for the satellites' acquisition and deployment. NIGCOMSAT's Managing Director and CEO, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, stated that this approval marks a significant milestone for both the company and Nigeria, aiming to enhance national satellite capacity and connectivity.

The launch is planned in two phases, with the first satellite expected to launch by the end of 2028, and the second in 2029 or 2030. The project aims to support various sectors, including education, healthcare, and national security, while reducing reliance on external satellite infrastructure.
