Nigeria Approves NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B Satellites

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation High-Throughput Communication Satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, aimed at improving digital connectivity nationwide. A statement from Stephen Kwande, head of corporate affairs at Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT), indicated that these satellites will provide high-capacity connectivity for various applications, including broadband and government services.

The Federal Executive Council's approval marks the start of the next phase of the project, with NIGCOMSAT overseeing implementation under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. Managing Director/CEO Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen described the approval as a significant milestone for both NIGCOMSAT and Nigeria's digital development.

The satellites are expected to enhance national satellite capacity, support critical communications, and improve access to digital services in sectors like education and healthcare. Additionally, the project aims to bolster national security communications and stimulate Nigeria's satellite and digital technology value chain.
