Nigeria Evacuates 1,490 Citizens from South Africa

The Federal Government of Nigeria completed the fifth phase of its voluntary evacuation of citizens affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa, bringing the total number of evacuated individuals to 1,490. The latest flight, operated by Air Peace, arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on July 15, 2023, carrying 305 returnees.

This operation was coordinated by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa as the spokesperson. The evacuation flights began on June 10, 2023, with subsequent flights on June 24, June 30, July 2, and July 9, resulting in the return of 258, 66, 272, 268, and 39 individuals, respectively.

The Nigerian government has condemned the xenophobic violence and continues to engage with South African authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad. It has also assured returnees of support for their reintegration into society.
