FG Charges Alleged Coup Plotters with Treason and Terrorism

The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed charges against several individuals accused of plotting a coup, including retired Major General Moham Ibrahim Gana, Captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, Inspector Ahm Ibrahim, and former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva. The charges, signed by Rotimi Oyedepo, Director of Public Prosecutions, include treason and terrorism, with the defendants allegedly conspiring to wage war against the state.

The charges stem from a reported coup attempt linked to the cancellation of the country's 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations on October 1, 2025. The Defence Headquarters has dismissed any connection between the cancellation and the alleged coup.

The accused are expected to be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja on April 22, 2025. The charges also include failure to disclose security intelligence and participation in meetings aimed at destabilizing the constitutional structure of Nigeria.
