Nigeria to Adopt Unified 112 Emergency Call Number

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with state governors and emergency responders, is set to finalize plans for the adoption of a unified 112 emergency call number across the nation. This initiative was discussed during a meeting at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by the Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe.

The initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's emergency response system and ensure a coordinated national response to emergencies. The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the adoption of the 112 emergency number, which will be implemented through a multi-agency committee.

Vice President Shettima directed the NCC to collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to leverage their expertise in disaster management. Olorunnimbe reported progress on establishing 35 emergency communication centers nationwide and emphasized the need for commitment from all levels of emergency response agencies to ensure effective operation.
