FG Awards N545bn Carter Bridge Project to CCECC

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially handed over the construction of a new Carter Bridge project in Lagos to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), with a total project cost of N545 billion. This decision follows a technical investigation that revealed significant underwater structural damage to the existing Carter Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge.

The handover ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, and was led by the Minister of Works, David Umahi. The project is expected to run for 36 months, with funding structured as 30% from the Federal Government and 70% sourced through external borrowing.

Umahi explained that the decision to construct a new bridge was based on expert advice, as repairs would cost nearly double that of a new structure. The new design will feature a modern cable-stayed section to enhance aesthetics and navigation along the waterway, contributing to world-class infrastructure in Lagos.
