Tinubu's Government Approves New Carter Bridge in Lagos

The government of Nigeria, under President Bola Tinubu, has approved the construction of a new Carter Bridge in Lagos, as announced by Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a handover ceremony on Wednesday. This project is part of the federal government's efforts to protect critical infrastructure and ensure public safety.

Investigations conducted over the years revealed worsening defects beneath the Carter Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge. A 2013 assessment noted disturbing defects, and a 2019 evaluation showed further deterioration.

The current administration has engaged geologists and specialists to confirm that the bridge's pile supports have shifted. Experts advised that repairing the existing bridge would cost almost twice as much as constructing a new one.

The new bridge will feature a cable-stayed design, enhancing navigational activities. The federal government will provide 30% of the funding, with the remaining 70% sourced externally.

Seven firms were invited to bid for the project, with six submissions received, including from CCECC, which has been directed to mobilize to the site immediately.
