FG and ICRC Promote Awareness on Gunshot Victims' Rights

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), is working to raise awareness regarding the rights of gunshot victims. This initiative was discussed by Malam Lanr Issa Onilu, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), during an event in Abuja on Wednesday.

The focus is on educating Nigerians about the 2017 law that mandates compulsory treatment for gunshot victims, which often faces delays due to the requirement of police reports for medical care. Dr.

Femi Ayiola, representing the NOA, emphasized the need to inform citizens about their rights to immediate access to healthcare facilities. Mr.

Jame Matthew, the Deputy Head of Delegation for the ICRC, highlighted that many gunshot victims in Nigeria experience delays in receiving life-saving treatment, primarily due to a lack of awareness of the law. The partnership aims to enhance public understanding and ensure that victims receive necessary care without unnecessary delays.
