Nigeria and IEA Partner on Methane Reduction Initiative

On a recent date, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Gaius Ekperikpe Ekpo, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Energy Agency (IEA) at the IEA headquarters in Paris, France. This agreement formalizes a strategic partnership focused on improving efficiency and aligning Nigeria's petroleum industry with global best practices.

The framework includes policies for methane emission reduction, technical capacity building, and data sharing to develop gas infrastructure. Minister Ekpo emphasized that clean cooking is a major pillar of the agreement, with President Bola Tinubu targeting the adoption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 5 million homes by 2030.

IEA Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol praised Nigeria's commitment to methane reduction and clean cooking expansion, expressing confidence that the partnership will provide technical expertise and global insights to accelerate infrastructure delivery.
