Nigeria and ILO Enhance Social Security Policy Training

The federal government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF, has launched a 5-day training workshop titled “Transforming Leadership Training on Social Protection” in Abuja. This initiative is part of the European Union-funded Supporting Sustainable Social Protection Systems in Nigeria (SUSI) project.

Ms. Franca Adiekwele, Director of Social Security at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, emphasized the importance of social protection in promoting inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction. She stated that the training aims to enhance the design, implementation, and monitoring of social protection policies to meet the evolving needs of the population.

Vanessa Phala, Director of the ILO Office for Nigeria and ECOWAS, highlighted the significance of strong social protection systems in safeguarding livelihoods and achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Mr. Chris Onyeka from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) stressed the necessity for policymakers to monitor government budgeting and expenditures related to social protection.
