Nigeria Enhances Surveillance Against Bird Flu Outbreaks

The Federal Government of Nigeria is intensifying its fight against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), commonly referred to as bird flu, as part of efforts to strengthen the animal health system and protect the poultry industry. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, made this announcement during a two-day workshop in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, organized in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The workshop aims to enhance Nigeria's preparedness to detect and respond to HPAI outbreaks. Maiha emphasized the need for a coordinated national response and a strong surveillance system, as Nigeria has faced recurrent outbreaks since 2021, leading to significant economic losses across multiple states.

The workshop is designed to gather stakeholder input to find lasting solutions to the recurring outbreaks. Dr.

Chinyer Ijeoma Akujobi, representing the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, and Dr. Samuel Anzaku highlighted the persistent threat of bird flu to the poultry industry and the importance of early reporting of suspected outbreaks.
