Federal Committee Meets Families of 37 Miners in Nigeria

The federal government committee investigating the deaths of 37 miners in Nigeria, chaired by Mr. Jonathan Kure, is currently meeting with the families of the deceased and survivors. This 10-member committee was established by the Minister of Interior, Hon Wale Tunji Ojo.

The committee has previously met with Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and Emir of Minna Alhaji Umaru Farouk Bago, assuring that the investigation's outcome will provide justice for the victims. The committee's closed-door session began after a forensic medical team conducted a week-long investigation into the circumstances surrounding the miners' deaths.

The session is intended as a fact-finding mission, with the Secretary to the Niger State Government stating it should remain private until public memoranda are received. The findings from this committee are anticipated to influence legislative discussions in the Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives regarding illegal and artisanal mining practices.
