FG Launches $1bn Social Protection Programme for 7.6m

On August 27, the Federal Government of Nigeria launched the $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Abuja. This initiative aims to transition vulnerable Nigerians from temporary relief to sustainable economic empowerment and self-reliance.

The programme includes the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP) and four other initiatives: the One-Humanitarian-One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), Emergency Cash Transfer Programme, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction Ministerial Blueprint, and the Humanity First Magazine. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu stated that these initiatives are designed to improve government responses to vulnerable households, particularly amid ongoing economic reforms by President Bola Tinubu's administration.

HOPE-SP is expected to benefit approximately 7.6 million households through a one-off cash transfer of ₦40,000, with beneficiaries identified from the National Social Register and validated using their National Identification Numbers (NINs) to enhance transparency and reduce fraud.
