Nigeria Launches Free Digital TV Platform with 100 Channels

On a scheduled date, the Federal Government of Nigeria launched a new digital television platform that will provide Nigerians with access to 100 free-to-air television channels. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to accelerate the country's transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, a process that has faced significant delays.

The launch event took place in Abuja and included key players from the broadcasting industry, such as television operators, signal distributors, satellite service providers, and content creators. Minister Moham Idri emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the success of the digital broadcasting initiative, which aims to improve television transmission quality and stimulate economic activity by creating job opportunities and strengthening Nigeria's creative industry.

The project is expected to adopt a hybrid broadcast model, combining digital terrestrial television (DTT) and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite broadcasting. Despite facing regulatory and infrastructural challenges, the government hopes this initiative will gain momentum in the long-awaited transition to digital broadcasting.
