FG Launches Hybrid Digital TV Platform for Nigerians

On the specified date, the Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled a new hybrid digital broadcast platform designed to provide Nigerians with access to 100 free television channels. This launch is part of a renewed effort to complete the country's long-delayed digital switch-over (DSO) program.

The announcement followed a high-level stakeholder meeting convened by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Abuja, which brought together regulatory bodies, broadcast signal distributors, satellite operators, set-top box manufacturers, and content producers. Mohammed Idris, the Minister, described the session as a familiar discussion aimed at resolving outstanding issues to advance Nigeria's digital migration agenda.

The success of the DSO will be measured not only by the deployment of digital infrastructure but also by job creation and business support for local content producers. Stakeholders unanimously adopted a hybrid broadcast model combining digital terrestrial television (DTT) and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite services, reaffirming their commitment to job creation and local content development.
