Nigeria's Information Minister Highlights Anti-Corruption Progress

On Tuesday, in Abuja, the Nigerian Information Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, stated that the government is making steady progress in its fight against corruption, supported by anti-graft reforms. He spoke during a media outreach event organized by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

Idris noted that Nigeria has significantly strengthened its financial intelligence architecture, particularly through the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), which has improved the monitoring of suspicious transactions and compliance with global anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) standards. He emphasized the media's crucial role in combating corruption, stating that accurate reporting and investigative journalism are essential for public enlightenment and accountability.

Idris acknowledged challenges such as misinformation and resource constraints that hinder journalistic efforts. He called for enhanced collaboration between government institutions and the media to build a transparent society where corruption cannot thrive.
