FG Engages SSANU, NASU to End University Workers' Strike

The Federal Government of Nigeria is making a renewed attempt to resolve the ongoing strike by university workers, which commenced on May 1, 2026. Leaders from the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday in Abuja.

Sources familiar with the developments indicate that the government hopes to present a more favorable offer during the discussions. The strike was initiated due to delays in negotiations and unresolved welfare issues, with union members expressing frustration over the slow pace of discussions.

An earlier circular announced a 30 percent increase in allowances, but no replacement proposal was presented, leading to the continuation of the strike. The unions had previously instructed their members to withdraw services nationwide after the deadline for negotiations passed without a new offer, making the strike unavoidable.
