SSANU Issues Ultimatum for Strike Over 2009 Agreement

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned of an impending indefinite nationwide strike if the federal government fails to finalize the renegotiation of a 2009 agreement by April 30, 2026. This ultimatum was issued in a communiqué released on Sunday in Abuja, following SSANU's 54th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Ekiti State University.

The statement, signed by SSANU President Muhammad Ibrahim, expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace and lack of clarity surrounding the ongoing renegotiation process. SSANU highlighted the absence of a firm timeline and concrete commitments from the government, urging for an urgent reconvening of discussions to conclude the process in a transparent and fair manner.

The union also criticized the persistent delays in salary payments and the non-implementation of wage increments, which have exacerbated economic hardship among its members. SSANU called for immediate settlement of outstanding salaries and advocated for a unified salary payment system.
