Nigerian Government Mobilizes 80,000 Farmers for ₦160 Billion Wheat Production Push

The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has announced a plan to mobilize 80,000 farmers for a wheat production initiative aimed at generating an estimated ₦160 billion by the 2025-2026 dry season. The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen food sovereignty and significantly reduce the country's dependence on wheat imports.

Minister Abubakar Kyari revealed the plan in Borno State, where the subsidy inputs distribution under the National Agricultural Growth Program (NAGP) for the new wheat season was flagged off. The program targets 40,000 hectares with 80,000 registered farmers nationwide, expecting to deliver wheat valued at ₦160 billion by the end of the season.

Borno State is set to play a major role in the initiative, with 3,000 hectares allocated to 6,000 registered farmers. The success of the program hinges on the quality of inputs reaching farmers, including certified seeds and fertilizers, to ensure compliance with national standards.
