Nigeria Introduces Rainfed Wheat Varieties to Boost Local Production and Food Security

The Nigerian government, led by Agriculture Minister Abubakar Kyari, has unveiled new rainfed wheat varieties to boost local production, decrease import costs, and strengthen food security. These varieties will allow wheat cultivation in non-irrigated areas like Plateau, Taraba, and Cross River States.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's agricultural transformation agenda, with plans to deploy 2,000 tractors and provide financial support to farmers. The government aims to reduce import dependency, potentially leading to future wheat exports.
