Nigeria Launches 112 as National Emergency Number

On September 9, 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria initiated the operationalization of 112 as the country's single national emergency number. Vice-President Kashim Shettima directed key security, emergency management, and telecommunications agencies to create a comprehensive roadmap for its nationwide implementation during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.

A committee, including the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), will finalize the operational roadmap and standard operating procedures for submission to the National Economic Council (NEC). This initiative aims to replace fragmented emergency response lines and streamline assistance for emergencies like armed attacks, kidnappings, and medical crises.

Shettima stressed the importance of moving from policy to practical implementation and assured that necessary resources would be provided. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu expressed full support for adopting 112 as the unified emergency number.
