FG Launches Probe into N120bn Power Losses in Nigeria

The federal government of Nigeria has ordered an investigation into significant energy theft and irregularities along the 132kV Ikorodu–Sagamu transmission corridor, with estimated losses reaching N120 billion. This action follows the discovery of discrepancies of up to 100 megawatts (MW) in electricity flows and consumption patterns over a one-year period.

Mr. Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, directed stakeholders to conduct a transparent, scientific, and fair investigation during a high-level meeting convened by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) in Abuja. NISO's enhanced monitoring systems revealed anomalous loading and consumption patterns, prompting the need for a technical and forensic investigation to determine the source of these discrepancies.

Tegbe warned against energy theft, meter tampering, and data manipulation, stressing the importance of accountability among consumers. Mr. Bello Mohammed, Managing Director and CEO of NISO, noted that the investigation's implications extend beyond technical matters, affecting power system security and public confidence in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
