FG Plans Salary Increase for Tinubu, Senators, Other Political Office Holders

The Federal Government is considering a salary increase for political office holders, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, senators, and ministers. The proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) aims to update the current salary structure, which has remained unchanged since 2008.

RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu announced the plan, stating that the President currently earns N1 million monthly, while ministers receive less than N1 million. The proposal has faced resistance from organized labor, with the Nigeria Labour Congress warning that raising salaries for politicians while ordinary Nigerians struggle with inflation and poverty would be unjust.

The RMAFC emphasized the need for realistic remuneration to ensure accountability and discourage corruption, as well as the importance of revising the revenue allocation formula to promote equity and sustainability.
