RMAFC Shuns Uproar, Says Nigerian Presidents Earn ₦1.5 Million Monthly Since 2008

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has disregarded criticism and stated that Nigerian presidents have been earning ₦1.5 million monthly since 2008. The statement was made by Maryam Yusuf, the Head of Information and Public Relations Unit of RMAFC, and Mohammed Usman, the Chairman of the Remuneration Monetisation Committee.

Usman revealed this information during a retreat organized by the commission in Kano, emphasizing the need for a review of Nigeria's governance structure. He mentioned that the current figures for President Tinubu and ministers receiving less than ₦1.5 million have remained unchanged since 2008.

The RMAFC is empowered by the 1999 Constitution to determine appropriate remuneration for political, public, and judicial office holders. However, the Labour Party's presidential candidate for the 2023 election criticized the move, calling it a "shameless grab at the expense of Nigeria's struggling majority.".
