Nigeria Prosecutes 500 Terrorism Suspects in Mass Trial

On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria began prosecuting 500 terrorism suspects in a mass trial, as announced by Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. The suspects were brought to court under heavy security, with military and police personnel present.

The trial is part of a broader effort to combat terrorism, with the first phase involving 227 suspects appearing before 10 judges in Abuja. Fagbemi emphasized the importance of prioritizing these trials, even during the Easter period, to address the security challenges posed by terrorism.

The trial will continue until either Friday or Saturday, with the aim of processing all 500 suspects. Notably, Justice Binta Nyako sentenced Hamatu Modu, a major food supplier for Boko Haram, to 40 years in prison after he confessed to supplying food items to terrorists.

The proceedings are designed to ensure transparency and due process, with legal aid provided to the defendants.
