FG Strengthens Non-Custodial Measures to Decongest Prisons

The Federal Government of Nigeria is implementing plans to strengthen non-custodial measures aimed at decongesting prisons. Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, during an event in Abuja on Tuesday, disclosed these initiatives while unveiling the National Minimum Standard 2025.

This framework includes a manual designed to promote alternative dispute resolution and reduce case backlogs. Fagbemi emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing accountability, protecting victim rights, and supporting offender rehabilitation to foster safer communities.

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, and Justice James Omotosho were present, reflecting the judiciary's commitment to strengthening the justice system. The initiative includes a three-day training program for stakeholders, with Leticia Ayoola Daniel, Director of Administration, Criminal Justice Reform, urging effective implementation.

Buba Marwa represented security agencies, highlighting the need for improved operational strategies nationwide.
